Day 15
Saturday March 29, 2003

Working "inside" what I refer to as "the cave" kept us protected from the weather and also allowed to us find artifacts as well as features which are far different from what we found in the other location.

The area where we dug before was the courtyard between Stevens' law office and the tavern next door. We learned that the people of those days ate oysters frequently, and because the oceans were not yet being "over-fished" the oysters were about double the size we see today.

The area we are now working in used to be the courtyard next to the house side of the property. At some point, the house's second floor was expanded to attach to the house next-door, which is what created our "roof." Most recently used as an auto mechanic's bay, the cement was removed and we began to excavate by laying out a grid. Breaking into groups, each group worked a different grid using various sampling methods to determine which of the grids were most likely to produce artifacts.

Working the area known as grids 7-9, I was finding small shards of locally produced redware pottery. Around 11 AM, I came across what appeard to be the rim of the largest ceramic bowl found to date. As the day progressed, I tediously excavated and eventually was able to remove the bowl from its resting place.
