On The Road Again

Corey and I left Shillington, PA around 7:30 in the morning, expecting to arrive sometime after 8PM in Knoxville, TN. We drove out Route 30 West from Lancaster so we could take the "scenic" route (see PA first). We drove through some really neat small towns and saw some of the hills and statues of Gettysburgh. Picking up I-81 in Chambersburg, I remembered that Michael had been taken by ambulance off this same road several years before due to an acute asthma attack.

The first state we entered was Maryland but we were only there for a very short time before crossing the border into West Virginia. There we stopped for a few pictures and Corey wanted to go to a convenience store. My gas tank was still showing close to full. She noticed the letters on the store's sign were filled with birdsnests, so I took a few pictures and we were back on the road.

The Appalachian mountains are gorgeous, spectacular shades of green, lush, and very humid. Crossing into Virginia we took a few more pictures and drove on toward Luray. Although we decided not to tour the caves in the area, we did rest for close to an hour. I think this was more for the benefit of getting out of the car than anything else. It also gave the car a chance to cool down (little did I know what steep hills we were yet to climb).

Virginia is a much larger state than I had imagined and we did not get to the Tennessee border until quite late. Somewhere along the road, we both realized around the same time that we'd forgotten to bring our pillows with us. For some reason, we always bring our own pillows; not for health/safety but rather because we are "scrunchers" and like our own when away from home. Somewhere close to the VA/TN border, we stopped at a Wal-Mart (the first of many) to buy pillows. We were then back on the road.

We finally arrived in TN and took a few pictures at the welcome sign. But, as we were told by some locals, we still had a few hours ahead of us if we were to keep our reservation in Knoxville. We finally arrived in Knoxville after close to 15 hours of driving. I credit this to poor planning and too much optimism on my part. We were glad to get the motel.
