Cahokia Mounds
After refilling our cooler and replenishing our water bottles as well as the gas tank, we were on our way to Cahokia Mounds. It was literally right around the corner from where we'd stayed. Once there, we realized it was just too hot and humid to do any walking; my knee had started to swell the day before. We watched the video in the Visitors' Center and drove across the road to Monks Mound. Corey told me I'd be nuts to even attempt the walk, considering my knee and the high humidity. We drove past Woodhenge and then headed back to the highway that would take us across Illinois, Indiana to Louisville, Kentucky.
About halfway across Indiana, we stopped at a Denny's Restaurant, which was housed in an old-fashioned diner, for a late lunch. We then drove on toward Louisville and our next overnighter. We were almost home; I'm not sure if I'm glad or not. Time will tell.
Around 9 PM, I decided to go across the road for snacks and to fill up the tank and check the fluid levels. While there, I figured it would be good to do a thorough cleaning of the windows. Corey cleaned the inside while I did the outside. A woman at the next pump remarked about all the bugs on her windshield; she'd just driven down from West Virginia (our next stop tomorrow) and told us how she's never seen so many bugs before. That made me laugh as I told her about Texas and Oklahoma's dive-bombing kamikazee bugs.
I didn't take any pictures worth sharing, so I've borrowed a few from other websites to give you an idea of what Monks Mound and Woodhenge look like. I have to admit I was very disappointed by Woodhenge. I almost missed it as I drove by, even though I was specifically looking for it.
